Bonus Content Terms

Some books on Inland have a bonus content page: extra audio, video, documents and notes from the book’s author or publisher. These Bonus Content Terms explain how those pages work, for readers who unlock or buy bonus content and for the teams who publish it.

These terms are part of our Terms of Use. Everything in the Terms of Use still applies, including the limits on our liability (Section 6) and the agreement to resolve disputes by arbitration (Section 10.2). If these terms and the Terms of Use disagree about bonus content, these terms win. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle personal information.

In these terms, “Inland”, “we” and “us” means Inland Works, Inc. A “team” is the author, publisher or other account on Inland that publishes a bonus content page. “Bonus content” means everything a team puts on that page.

Part A. For readers

1. Who you’re dealing with

Bonus content is provided and sold by the book’s team, not by Inland. The team is the seller and is responsible for the content. Inland runs the website and player, and collects payment on the team’s behalf through our payment processor, Stripe (see Section 9 of the Terms of Use). Your card statement may show Inland. Paying Inland for bonus content counts as paying the team.

2. What you get

When you unlock or buy bonus content, the team gives you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to:

  • watch, listen to and read it in the Inland player, for your own personal, non-commercial use; and
  • download the PDFs, and any audio or video the team lets you download, and keep those copies for your own personal, non-commercial use.

You’re buying access to the content, not the content itself. The team and its licensors keep all rights in it. Buying “full access” to a page covers the extras on the page while it is available, including any the team adds later, but the team doesn’t promise to add more.

3. How long access lasts

Your access lasts while the page is available on Inland. It is not permanent access, and neither the team nor Inland promises to keep the page available for any particular length of time.

Teams can change or replace their content, and can hide an extra from new visitors. Hiding an extra doesn’t take it away from people who already have it.

4. If a page closes

A team can close its page, and Inland can close a page or end bonus content on Inland altogether. When that happens, everyone who has access gets at least 30 days’ notice by email, sent to the email address on their Inland account. The page also shows the closing date. During the notice period:

  • you keep access to everything you had;
  • you can download the PDFs, and audio and video where offered, to keep for personal use; and
  • nobody new can unlock or buy the page.

After the closing date you can no longer open the page on Inland. The team may reopen it later, but doesn’t have to, so download anything you want to keep before then. Copies you downloaded are yours to keep for personal use. Please keep your account email address up to date; a notice sent to it counts as notice even if you don’t read it.

5. Removal without notice

Sometimes content has to come down straight away, for example because of a court order or other legal requirement, a credible complaint that it infringes someone’s rights, a safety concern, fraud, or a security problem. In those cases we may remove content or close a page without notice. If that happens to something you paid for, the refund rules below apply.

6. Refunds

Bonus content is digital content you can use straight away. When you buy, you ask for immediate access and agree that you can’t cancel for a refund once access has started. So purchases are generally not refundable once you’ve opened or downloaded the content. You can get a full refund if:

  • you haven’t opened or downloaded any of what you bought, and you ask within 14 days of buying;
  • the page closes, or the extra you bought is removed, within 30 days of your purchase (counting to the day the closing or removal is announced);
  • you were charged by mistake, for example twice for the same thing; or
  • the content doesn’t work, and we and the team can’t fix it within a reasonable time.

We’ll also give a refund wherever the law requires one. Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have under consumer law where you live. Refunds go back to your original payment method. To ask for one, email hello@inlandbooks.com with the email address you bought with. If a purchase is refunded, access to what it bought ends. Teams may choose to give refunds in other cases.

7. Sharing your email address with the team

Some extras are free when you share your email address with the book’s author and the team that publishes the page, both named where you agree. That is always your choice. The box is never ticked for you, and we keep a record of what you agreed to and when. If you agree, the team receives your name and email address and may contact you about this book and related work.

Some extras open when you show you bought the book: with a code printed in your copy, or with a photo or PDF of your receipt. If you upload a receipt, we keep it privately for 30 days to confirm your purchase, then delete it. We keep a record that you uploaded one, with the date and any order number you gave. Until it’s deleted, Inland and the book’s team can see your receipt. Please upload a receipt only for a copy you bought, and cover anything you’d rather not share, like a card number. Uploading a receipt doesn’t share your email address with the team unless you tick the box to.

When you buy bonus content, the team receives your name and email address so it can complete the sale and handle questions. You can tell us at checkout that you only want to hear about your purchase.

Once the team has your details, its own privacy policy applies. Every marketing email it sends must include an unsubscribe link, and teams must honor unsubscribes. You can turn updates from a book's team on or off at any time from that book in your Book Extras library. Emails from Inland are managed in your account settings.

8. What you can’t do

Please don’t share, upload, sell, stream, publicly perform, or otherwise distribute bonus content or your downloads, or share your account so others can get in. Don’t try to get around the player, download limits or other protections. If you do, the team or Inland may end your access without a refund, in addition to anything else under the Terms of Use.

9. The content is the team’s responsibility

The team creates the bonus content and is responsible for it, including whether it is accurate and whether the team has the rights to share it. Inland doesn’t review content before it is published and doesn’t endorse it. Questions about the content itself go to the team; we’re happy to pass them on. Inland provides the page and player “as is”, as described in Section 5 of the Terms of Use. We work to keep them running, but they may sometimes be unavailable.

10. Our liability

Section 6 of the Terms of Use limits Inland’s liability, and it applies to bonus content too. It doesn’t limit a refund you’re owed under Section 6 of these terms, or anything the law doesn’t allow us to limit.

Part B. For teams

These terms apply to every team that publishes a bonus content page, on top of the Terms of Use. Whoever accepts them for a team confirms they’re allowed to bind it.

11. Your content and your rights

You promise that, for everything you put on a bonus content page:

  • you own it, or have every license and permission needed to share it with readers worldwide, in the ways these terms describe, for as long as it is on Inland. That includes music and sound recordings, film and video clips, photos and artwork, text excerpts, and interviews or appearances by other people (with releases from anyone who can be identified);
  • it doesn’t infringe anyone’s rights, and isn’t unlawful, defamatory or in breach of our Acceptable Use Policy (Terms of Use, Section 3.3);
  • it doesn’t include anyone else’s personal information unless you’re allowed to share it; and
  • the way you describe and price it is accurate.

You confirm this each time you upload a file. You keep ownership of your content.

12. The license you give Inland and readers

You give Inland a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, store, copy, convert, transcode, encrypt, stream, display and deliver your bonus content, to make technical versions of it (such as streaming formats, page images, thumbnails and posters), and to show the page, its title, cover and descriptions to promote it on Inland. You also give each reader the license described in Section 2, including the right to keep downloaded copies for personal use after the page closes.

The license to Inland lasts while the content is on Inland, then for as long as we need to finish a closing period, keep backups for a limited time, meet legal obligations, or deal with a claim. For bonus content, this license is used in place of the wider license in Section 3.2 of the Terms of Use.

13. Hosting is not forever

Inland doesn’t promise to host your content for any minimum period, and isn’t a backup service. Keep your own copies of everything you upload. We may set limits on file sizes and storage.

14. Closing your page

You can close your page from your dashboard at any time. When you do, everyone with access gets at least 30 days’ notice and can download their files during that time (see Section 4). You can’t shorten the notice period or take away access people already have, except where Section 5 applies. If nobody has access yet, you can unpublish or delete the page instead. After the closing date, readers can no longer open the page. Its files stay in your team’s Media Library until you delete them, and a team admin can reopen the page; readers who had access get it back.

15. When Inland may remove content

We may remove or hide content, stop new sales, close a page, or suspend your access to bonus content features if we reasonably believe that you’ve broken these terms or the Terms of Use, that the content infringes someone’s rights or the law, that it creates a safety, legal or security risk, or that a payment is fraudulent. We may also end the bonus content feature, giving readers the notice in Section 4. Where we can, we’ll tell you first and give you a chance to fix the problem. We aren’t liable to you for removing content in line with these terms.

If your team account is suspended or the feature is switched off for your team, readers keep their access until the page closes in the usual way.

16. Readers, refunds and disputes

You’re responsible for answering readers’ questions about your content within a reasonable time when we pass them on. Inland handles questions about accounts, access and payments.

You agree that refunds in Section 6 of these terms may be given to readers, as well as refunds you agree to and refunds the law requires. Refunds and chargebacks for your content are your cost: we may reverse the related transfer to you or deduct the amount from future payouts. Payment processing fees that Stripe doesn’t return are not refunded to you.

If your readers upload receipts to show they bought the book, look at them only to confirm purchases. Don’t copy, download to keep, or share them. We delete each receipt after 30 days.

17. Payments and payouts

Bonus content sales work the same way as event ticket sales on Inland. You need a payout account connected through Stripe, in good standing under Stripe’s terms (Terms of Use, Section 9), to sell. We collect payment from readers on your behalf. Inland’s commission, as shown in your dashboard or agreed with you, is deducted from each sale, and the rest is paid out to your connected account on Inland’s payout schedule. We may hold payouts while a refund, chargeback or investigation is open.

18. Taxes

You’re responsible for taxes on your income from bonus content. You’re also responsible for any sales tax, VAT, GST or similar tax on your sales, except where the law makes Inland responsible for collecting it (for example, as a marketplace facilitator), in which case we may add it to the price or deduct it from the sale. You agree to give us the tax information we or Stripe need.

19. Using readers’ email addresses

When a reader shares their email address with you or buys from you, you receive it as an independent business, and you’re responsible for how you use it. You agree to:

  • use it only to complete the sale and answer questions, and, if the reader agreed, to contact them about the book and related work by the author or publisher;
  • not contact readers with updates if they asked to hear only about their purchase;
  • include a working unsubscribe link in every marketing email and honor unsubscribes promptly;
  • not sell or give the addresses to anyone else, other than service providers who send email for you;
  • keep them secure, and handle requests from readers to access or delete their details; and
  • follow the email marketing and privacy laws that apply to you and your readers (for example CAN-SPAM, CASL, GDPR and UK GDPR, and US state privacy laws).

20. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Inland and its officers, employees and agents, including reasonable legal fees, against any claim by a third party (including a reader, a rights holder or a regulator) arising from your bonus content, your breach of these terms, or your use of readers’ personal information. Section 3.5 of the Terms of Use explains how we handle claims.

Part C. General

21. Copyright and other complaints

If you think bonus content infringes your copyright, please follow the process in Section 8 of the Terms of Use. For other concerns, email hello@inlandbooks.com.

22. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. If we make a substantial change, we’ll tell you by email or on the site before it takes effect. Changes won’t shorten the notice period for a page you already have access to, or reduce a refund you’re already owed. If you keep using bonus content after a change, the new terms apply.
